Tithe does not make you rich

1. The place of tithe and giving in creation of wealth

It is true that tithing and giving causes financial increase but the big question that has left many believers bewildered is, “How does it exactly happen?” The answer to this question is one of the revelations that will change your life forever. But to begin with, let us see what the Bible says about what tithe has to do with creation of wealth.

10Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. 11I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit,” says the LORD Almighty (Mal 3:10-11).

a. In one word, what does God promise in return to one who faithfully pays their tithe?

b. As a faithful tither and giver, would you say you have experienced Mal 3:10 or do you feel you are yet to experience financial increase despite your faithful giving?

If you are yet to, take heart you are not alone. Before I discovered this truth, I continued to tithe and give sacrificially for a long time and expected God to bless me materially as he has promised in His word. However, this did not happen. Was God unfaithful? Definitely not! When I started practicing the other principles as shared in this study, my life started changing and I began to see his promises come true in my life.

One of the life changing insights I got regarding the place of tithe in wealth creation is revealed in Deuteronomy 28:12. 12The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands.

c. So, what kind of relationship do you see between tithing and producing wealth?

Even though the core of tithing and giving is not to lure God to multiply our resources but to honor Him in our lives, it is evident from scripture that honoring God with our wealth has a lot to do with the creation of more material wealth. According to Malachi 3:10-11, whose context is farming, God promises Israel two things upon tithing faithfully; rain and protection of their crops (investment) from pests – blessings only God can give. Solomon also discovered this truth. In Proverbs 3:9-10 he says: Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; 10then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.

2. How does tithe and giving cause financial increase?

So, how does tithing and giving exactly cause financial increase? Having discussed how God provides and gives wealth and the place of the supernatural in the same, I now have the confidence to share with you a radical revelation from the “book of tithe”; Malachi 3:10-11.

One of the life changing insights I received in regard to this question is revealed in Deuteronomy 28:12-14. It reveals that the pouring of blessings mentioned in Malachi 3:10 refers to rain, not money or any material things. Tithing does not make us rich; it only connects us with the blessing that makes us rich when we fulfill the biblical principles revealed in the Nawiri study. In our modern day terms, it would be stated that God made Israel rich by enabling their investments (crops, livestock and merchandise) to grow as He reduced the risks by protecting their investments from devourers (pests).

The other insight I received from both Malachi 3:10-11 and Deut 28:12-14 is the fact that God was to bless Israel through the crops that they had planted in their farms. It then dawned on me that it is not enough to just tithe. I needed to have a farm (a channel) through which wealth would come.
This means that the realization of the wealth promise will involve the working out of our farms (employment, investments, and business) on our part and the blessing of the work of our hands on God’s part. I have since established several farms (multiple channels) and my life has never been the same again.

a. Have you established wealth creation channels in your life and if not, what action steps will you take in that direction?

A job is the most basic channel and one of the main sources of the seeds from which wealth is propagated. I say basic because in most cases, a job does not make a man rich- it only avails him the seeds for growing and multiplying wealth. It is what a man does with the money that he earns out of his job that determines if he will grow rich or not. If he squanders it, that is the end of it. If he decides to put some of it aside as seed and start growing it into wealth, then he becomes rich.

Investments and business enterprises comprise the farm in which we should sow our wealth creation seeds. Investments and business enterprises are the channel that we should all aim at utilizing in creating wealth. Unlike a job, investments and business enterprises are unlimited in their potential to create and grow wealth. Wisdom on how to succeed in business and investments is shared in later sessions within this pillar.

It is important to point out though that mere application of wealth creation principles such as setting some money aside and investing it will not in itself make any believer rich. We should always remember that it is God who gives us the ability to produce wealth (Deut 8:18). It is His blessing that brings wealth (Prov 10:22) and there are obedience conditions that must be fulfilled for this blessing to be released (Deut 28). Tithing is one of these obedience conditions.
